Now that we have established that teen movies are a legitimate genre and great movies, I want to share some of my favourites! Here is my top 10 (this list is in no particular order)!
If you missed my last post and still need convincing about the amazing and great nature of teen movies you can read it here!

Marboroshi (2023) – Netflix
Sub-genre: Sci-fi, Drama, Romance
Similar Media: Your Name, My Neighbour Totoro, Silo (2023 TV Series)
Masamune lives in a town where time has stopped. After an explosion in his small factory town, time is frozen. No one ages, no one dies,
and every day is spring. One day, cracks in the town begin to form and the chance to break out of their town arises. Masamune and his friends have to decide how they want their futures to look like and who they want to be with.
Unlike the other movies on this list, Maboroshi is a sci-fi movie first and a teen movie second. Despite this, I think that this movie shows the versatility of what a teen movie can be and the stories it can tell. This is a movie about apathy, mortality, grief, and family and I think that these are all themes that are often presented in more obvious teen movies. The majority of this movie is centred around the idea that in the grand scheme of things, our lives are so short and we should be doing what we want to do, not what others want us to do. Why are we doing things that make us board, why aren’t we taking any risks, what do we do with infinite time?
This movie is also quite angsty but in a way that is profound and endearing. I think it is able to do this by making it so the characters are unable to run away from their problems. They are stuck in time, and they leave the city because of this they are forced to confront what is in front of them with little room to run.

A Silent Voice (2016) – Netflix
Sub-genre: Drama, Romance
Similar Media: Speak, A Sign of Affection (manga)
After bulling the new deaf transfer student Shouko Nishimiya, Shouya’s life is in shambles. Despite the whole class partaking in the bulling,
Shouya is the only person blamed, and this is something that follows and torments him throughout middle school. Now in his last year of high school, he is making it his mission to redeem himself. He wants to meet Shouko and apologize.
This movie is a masterpiece, its an amazing story with stunning animation and honestly is one of my favourite movies. I don’t think the story is particularly revolutionary, its a teen movie about bulling, but it tells it in such a excellent way. Its a movie about redemption but also growing as a person despite actions in the past.

The Karate Kid (1984)
Sub-genre: Sports, Drama, Action
Similar Media: Haikyuu (anime/manga), The Outsiders, Whip It
When Daniel LaRusso movies to the suburbs of Los Angeles he is having a hard time fitting in. After being bullied by some kids who attend the

Starstruck (2010) – Disney+
Sub-genre: Music, Comedy, Romance
Similar Media: Lemonade Mouth, Camp Rock, Raise Your Voice

dragged along on her sisters quest to track down Christopher. Jessica could not care less about Christopher or his music, but in a chance encounter the two of them meet and things go downhill from there.
Is this the best movie ever made… no, not even close. But I still think this is a very fun movie, I think its hard not to enjoy this movie. I have written an entire essay about this movie and why I think it is amazing (but also just fanfiction) and you can read it here!

Into The Beat (2020) – Netflix

Fierce (2020) – Netflix
Sub-genre: Comedy, Drama, Music
Similar Media: Teen Spirit, Sing Street
When Marta auditions for a singing contest she doesn’t expect to make it onto the next round. Despite this, she becomes the next sensation with everyone from her small town cheering her
on. The truth behind her experience is not to become the next big pop-star, rather to get revenge on her estranged father who happens to be one of the celebrity judges on the show.
Fierce is a movie about fame, family, and forgiveness. It’s also a movie about discovering who you are and the type of people you want to surround yourself with. Marta is a messy character, but she is also still a child and learning to deal with her emotions. She is not ready for fame, nor does she really understand the breadth or consequences of her actions. She is rash and still learning what she wants to do with her life.
I think this movie is also a critique of celebrity culture and deconstructs what it means to be famous and the illusion and truth behind famous people. Not to spoil the movie, but the third act conflict revolves around the producers of the show making a decision that takes into account what makes “good television” over what is the best for the characters. At the end of the day, the producers of the song contest are there not to help the participants, but rather to make their show dramatic and scandalous. This makes that characters forced to confront and reflect on their past actions. I think this makes the characters have to choose between their careers or their families. Although not every teen will be famous and on national televised song contests, I think the lessons presented in this are still universal and are founded on the idea of what is the cost of our actions.
